Country Information

Located in the Indian Ocean, the Indonesia archipelago covers an area of almost 2,000,000 sq km and consists of over 17,000 islands. The five largest are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya.

Indonesia has a population of over 226 million people, around 55% of whom are located on the island of Java, one of the most densely populated regions of the world. The capital city, Jakarta, is located in Java.

Indonesia is the 15th largest producer of oil and gas in the world today, and remains one of the largest producers in Southeast Asia.  At the end of 2006, Indonesia was producing on average some 1.1 million barrels of oil per day and 7.3 billion cubic feet of gas per day. With proved reserves of 4.3 billion barrels of oil and 97 trillion cubic feet of gas, Indonesia has a reserves life (at current production levels) of 11 years for oil and 36 years for gas.
